Recently Maria Laquerre-Diego LMFT, RPT-S presented a one hour class called Superheroes and Pop Culture in Play Therapy as part of the 2020 Mini Master Class Series.

I had the delight of getting to know Maria quite well as we navigated the necessary shift from my plans to present in person for two days in New Mexico for the NMAPT conference to an online format due to the pandemic. She serves as the President of the New Mexico Association for Play Therapy and is truly the consummate professional when it comes to detail, hospitality and integrity. Her commitment to social justice and attention to the needs of cultural diversity awareness is something I greatly respect and appreciate.  I am very enthusiastic about having hosted her to present this class for the  learning enrichment opportunity for the play therapy community. Maria is fun, engaging, delightful and highly knowledgeable.

This super fun class will help you SUPER POWER UP YOUR TOOLBOX! Maria Lacquerre-Diego, LMFT, RPT-S will teach you in one hour how to welcome pop culture and superheroes into your therapy room and witness powerful connection and transformations as a result! You don’t have to know the ins and outs of what children are “obsessed” with to use this to your advantage. Maria plans to show you how to utilize some of the more popular superheroes and pop culture icons in sessions through actionable and practical skills right away.

After graduating with her bachelor’s degree in Child and Family Sciences from NMSU in 2003, Maria went on to obtain her master’s degree in Marriage and Family Therapy from the University of New Hampshire in 2005. She returned to Las Cruces and worked as a therapist is a variety of settings including inpatient residential settings, community-based mental health agencies, and school-based health centers. Since 2008 she has provided clinical supervision to support other therapists to obtain their licenses and have been the clinical director for three organizations, including Tafoya and Associates. In 2017, her husband and she purchased that agency and renamed the group  A New Hope Therapy Center. From there, they began expanding services to Las Cruces and the surrounding areas. Maria has a deep understanding of the need for the best clinical care in her local community and she is passionate about supporting this need for local therapists through supervision, consultation, and local workshops for therapists and counselors.

Maria Lacquerre-Diego, LMFT, RPT-S provides supervision services, case consultation and continuing education. You can learn more about her and her services on her center’s website here.

The fun and joy of incorporating superhero play into sessions will help not only be fun and engaging but will help therapists better join with children and teens who may be more challenging to engage.
