Compassion Fatigue, Burnout & the Ethics of Self Care for Psychotherapists

a Continuing Education Opportunity in a Retreat Setting

Psychotherapists are at high risk of burnout and compassion fatigue if regular self care is not observed. This 2 day training takes place in a beautiful mountain retreat setting providing continuing education for psychotherapists addressing counselor identity and professional practice specifically on  how to implement appropriate and effective self care so that we are equipped and prepared to ethically provide psychotherapy services to clients in need. We will also cover how to identify signs of compassion fatigue, vicarious trauma and burnout and how to address and mitigate those symptoms effectively.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Receive thorough review and participate in group discussion of appropriate ethics codes with regard to the essential nature of self care. Apply ethics code tenets that relate to therapist self care to case studies.
  2. Learn the signs and symptoms of burnout, vicarious trauma and compassion fatigue and distinguish one from the others. Learn how to create a plan for self care that includes attention to daily, weekly, monthly and annual self care implementations.
  3. Learn about neurobiology of the psychotherapist when working with clients who have experienced trauma. Receive training and practice in empirical studied practices of mindfulness meditation, relaxation techniques and other self-regulatory and self-awareness methods.
  4. Learn about the science of aromatherapy in relations to the connection between the olfactory receptors and the limbic brain for emotion regulation and soothing for the nervous system. Learn about the importance of healthy nutrition and regular nourishment of the physical body as self care. Receive at least 20 specific self-care interventions for the psychotherapist to implement.
